Church of Saint George - Nea Chili

About

In the heart of Nea Chili, on the settlement's main road, stands the Church of Saint George. On the same site the old stone church and the newer, larger church built in front of it stand side by side, a rare sight that tells the whole story of the settlement.

From a wooden church to the stone church of 1953

When Nea Chili was founded in 1924, the first residents put up a wooden church dedicated to Saint George. When it wore out, the residents themselves built the stone church with their own labour, and it was inaugurated in 1953 by Metropolitan Ioakeim Kavyris of Alexandroupoli.

As the settlement grew, the stone church became too small. In 1987 the foundation stone of the new, larger church was laid, and the old one gradually fell out of use.

Restoration and reopening in 2023

Restoration of the stone church began in 2022: roof, stonework, electrics, heating and furnishings. It was ceremonially reopened on Saint George's Day 2023 and returned to the parish's worship.

Pontus and the Peristereota icon

The parish is closely tied to refugee memory. In 2019 Nea Chili welcomed for veneration the historic icon of Saint George Peristereota, from the monastery of the same name near Trabzon, which was saved and brought to Greece after the uprooting of 1923.

The feast of 23 April

On Saint George's Day all of Nea Chili celebrates. After the liturgy, the settlement traditionally held wrestling matches, a custom brought by refugees from Asia Minor and Pontus.

Visiting tips

  • Two churches, one visit: step first into the small stone church for the atmosphere of the 1950s, then into the new one for its icon painting and spaciousness.
  • A walk to the sea: combine your visit with a stroll through the lanes of Nea Chili to Nea Chili beach. A little further east is the Church of Saint Andrew.
