About

A wooden-roofed basilica from 1834, the Church of Agios Athanasios stands in Lavara, a small town on the road linking Soufli with Didymoteicho. The village was formerly called Saltikioi and took its current name in 1920, after the blue flag with a black cross raised by its residents during the 1821 revolutionary uprising, when they disarmed an Ottoman military detachment at the "Kouri" site.

Dedicated to Saint Athanasios, the church is today one of the oldest religious monuments in the area and a reference point for the local history of Lavara.
