Ancient Olive Grove of Makri

16.57 km from the center

About

One of the oldest olive groves in the Mediterranean, with around 220,000 trees - some up to 2,500 years old, with huge trunks and rare branching. References to the area's "huge olive trees" go back to post-Byzantine times. At the edge of the grove lies the Cyclops Cave, traditionally said to have been the home of the mythical Polyphemus. Makri's olives give the region its namesake PDO olive oil.
