About

Panagia tou Evrou. A women's monastery on the sea, between Dikella and Makri.

What it is

The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos of Makri, or Panagia tou Evrou, is in Thrace, on the Makri coast, 16km west of Alexandroupoli, between the settlements of Paralia Dikellon and Panorama. The Egnatia Odos motorway passes to the north.

It's a women's monastery. In July 1974, the newly-elected Metropolitan of Alexandroupoli, Anthimos (later Metropolitan of Thessaloniki), found that within his diocese there wasn't a single monastery, not even a dependency of another one. The need to establish a women's sisterhood led him to build the katholikon on land in Makri that belonged to the Metropolis. It has operated since 1983 and belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Alexandroupoli, Traianoupoli and Samothraki.

Between 1978-1981 the main buildings and the katholikon (main church) were built. It holds the patronal icon of "Panagia tou Evrou," painted over the damaged wood of an older icon from Mount Athos.

The spiritual father of the sisterhood from 1983 until his passing in 2012 was Fr. Polykarpos Mantzaroglou, of Asia Minor origin, who accepted the invitation of then-Metropolitan Anthimos to staff the monastery.

The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos and celebrates its feast on 23 August - the "Ennaimera" of the Virgin. It has been recorded as a separate settlement named Kimisi Theotokou since 1981, and in the 2011 census had 40 nuns.

The nuns carry out traditional monastic duties: icon painting, ecclesiastical sewing, embroidery, incense-making and candle-making. The monastery keeps ties with sister monasteries in fellow Orthodox countries - Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania, Syria and Lebanon - hosting nuns who come to learn Greek, Byzantine music and the monastery's duties.

Panagia Tricherousa

The monastery holds an exact copy of the icon "Panagia Tricherousa" (the Three-Handed Virgin), whose original is kept at Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos. Tradition attributes the icon to Saint John of Damascus, an advisor to the Caliph of Damascus in the 7th-8th century, who is said to have lost his hand after being falsely accused, then been miraculously healed while praying before the icon. Out of gratitude, he added a silver replica of his hand to the icon - hence the name "Tricherousa." The monastery also holds a large number of holy relics.
