About

At the Saraya site, on a low rise just outside Feres, lie the ruins of ancient Doriskos, a Thracian city that changed hands many times in antiquity. The Persian king Darius I stationed a garrison there in 513 BC, and in 480 BC Xerxes stopped at Doriskos to resupply his fleet and count his army before the campaign against Greece. Doriskos later joined the Athenian League and subsequently passed to the Macedonians and Ptolemies.

Today the rise still shows remains of the ancient wall and burial mounds, and pottery sherds and ancient coins have occasionally turned up - traces of a city that once minted its own coinage and had a thriving economy.
