Barrel Jellyfish

About

Its sting is generally considered mild and not dangerous, but avoid touching it. If you get its mucus on your hands and then touch your face, eyes or lips, it can cause intense swelling and irritation. If irritation occurs, rinsing with plain seawater is the first and best step.

One of the largest jellyfish in our seas, with a large white or semi-translucent, bell-shaped body and a distinctive vivid blue or purple rim around its edge. It is not aggressive and its venom is weak, but it releases toxin-laden mucus into the water, so you may feel a slight sting or itch even from swimming close by without touching it directly.
