About
A transparent, barrel-shaped planktonic chordate (tunicate) of the family Salpidae, usually 1 to 10 cm long, which often forms large colonies or chains many metres in length. Despite its jellyfish-like look and jelly-like texture, it does not sting and is not a jellyfish - it is actually more closely related to vertebrates. It contracts rhythmically, pumping water through its body for propulsion while filtering out phytoplankton to feed on. Found in open seas worldwide, including the Mediterranean, from the surface down to about 800 m depth.
