About
A species of ray-finned fish in the seabream family. Individuals can reach 40cm, though typically 15-20cm. Silvery, elongated body with a very large eye and 3-4 faint golden-yellow stripes running along the body. A schooling, benthopelagic species.
Distribution and habitat
Eastern Atlantic from Norway to Angola, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. A coastal species found at depths of 0-350m, schooling over sandy and rocky seabeds and seagrass meadows. Lives up to 11 years.
Diet
An omnivorous species - feeds on plankton, small crustaceans and algae. This is why it gathers immediately around swimmers who stir up sand or crack open shells.
Danger level
Harmless. Doesn't bite and has no spines. Edible, very common in Greece.
