Decorator Crab

About

No venom or sting. Its claws are thin and weak compared to other crabs, used more like tweezers for feeding. Even if it pinches, the bite is very mild and won't break skin.

One of the most sophisticated "decorator crabs" of the Greek seabed. It snips pieces of live algae, sponges or bryozoans with its claws and attaches them to its shell with a sticky secretion, held in place by hundreds of tiny hook-like bristles - a natural velcro. If it moves to a seabed with different-coloured algae, it deliberately sheds its old "costume" and builds a new one to match its surroundings. An omnivorous scavenger, it cleans the seabed by feeding on small algae, dead organic matter and worms.
